Hemochromatosis is a frequent genetic disorder, characterized by the accumulation of excess iron across tissues. Mutations in the FPN1 gene, encoding a cell surface iron exporter [ferroportin (Fpn)], are responsible for hemochromatosis type 4, also known as ferroportin disease.
