High molecular weight penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) are responsible for the biosynthesis of peptidoglycan. In Escherichia coli, PBP1a and PBP1b form multienzyme peptidoglycan-synthesizing complexes with outer membrane lipoproteins LpoA and LpoB, respectively.
