Mitochondrial function is controlled by two separate genomes. This feature makes mitochondria prone to proteotoxic stress when a stoichiometric imbalance occurs in the protein complexes that perform oxidative phosphorylation, which consist of both nuclear- and mitochondrial-encoded proteins.
