OBJECTIVE: The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) consists of three cartilaginous structures: the fossa, disc, and condyle. In juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), inflammation of the TMJ leads to destruction of the condyle, but not of the fossa or the disc.
