Cellular copper homeostasis requires transmembrane transport and compartmental trafficking while maintaining the cell essentially free of uncomplexed Cu(2+/+). In bacteria, soluble cytoplasmic and periplasmic chaperones bind and deliver Cu(+) to target transporters or metalloenzymes.
