Azathioprine (AZA) is indicated for the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) is the rate-limiting enzyme in the steps of AZA metabolization. Heritable deficiency of TPMT enzyme activity and polymorphisms may lead to leukopenia.
