Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a neuromuscular disease characterized by selective loss of motor neurons leading to fatal paralysis. We previously reported a coding mutation in D-amino acid oxidase (R199W DAO) associated with familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
