The DLP12 lysis cassette (essD, ybcT, rzpD/rzoD) is required in certain Escherichia coli strains for normal curli expression and biofilm development. Tightly controlled regulation of the lysis cassette is of particular importance, since its overexpression causes host cell lysis.
