Human articular cartilage has been separated into surface (approx. 15% of tissue depth) and deep zones (remaining tissue) and the constituent chondrocytes released by enzymic digestion. Subsequent culture either as a low density monolayer or as a suspension over agarose revealed distinct morphological and synthetic behaviour in the two populations.
