Homo- and heterofermentative species of Lactobacillus have been isolated from sugary kefir grains. Most of the homofermentative strains fermented tagatose and aldonitol and presented 48-54% of homology with Lactobacillus paracasei ssp. paracasei NCDO 151 (ex Lactobacillus casei).
