Sirohaem is a cofactor of nitrite and sulfite reductases, essential for assimilation of nitrogen and sulfur. Sirohaem is synthesized from the central tetrapyrrole intermediate uroporphyrinogen III by methylation, oxidation and ferrochelation reactions.
