The ascorbic acid (AA)-deficient Arabidopsis thaliana mutant vtc1-1, which is defective in GDP-mannose pyrophosphorylase (GMPase), exhibits conditional hypersensitivity to ammonium (NH(4) (+) ), a phenomenon that is independent of AA deficiency.
