BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The m.3243A>G mutation is the most common pathogenic mutation in mtDNA; tissues with high dependence on aerobic energy metabolism, such as the brain, heart, and skeletal muscle, are most affected by the ensuing mitochondrial dysfunction.
