Currently, the genus Lactococcus is classified into six species: Lactococcus chungangensis, L. garvieae, L. lactis, L. piscium, L. plantarum, and L. raffinolactis. Among these six species, L. lactis is especially important because of its use in the manufacture of probiotic dairy products.
