Vaccinia-measles recombinant viruses were used to examine the contribution of the individual measles virus glycoproteins in fusion. Although vaccinia virus recombinants expressing either the haemagglutinin or fusion proteins did not induce fusion in the cell lines examined, a double recombinant expressing both measles virus glycoproteins gave extensive syncytia in cells of human and simian origin.
