Here we address the function of the hydrophobic carboxy-terminal tail of the pro-apoptotic protein Bax. The tail is tucked into a hydrophobic pocket within the closed/inactive conformation of Bax. Apoptotic stimulation changes the Bax conformation, exposing a mitochondrial-targeting signal.
