The fimD gene of Escherichia coli K12 was shown to be necessary for surface localization of type 1 fimbriae, since deletion of the gene resulted in a virtually bald phenotype. The FimD protein was found to be located in the outer membrane. Expressed alone, this protein had a very deleterious effect on cell growth.
