Oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) diseases are caused by inherited or spontaneously occurring mutations in the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) or the nuclear DNA. Mutations in the mtDNA can be classified into two groups, rearrangements and point mutations.
