BACKGROUND: Bladder cancer is the most common urologic malignancy in the USA. Tobacco smoking generates oxidative DNA damage and induces bladder cancer. Base excision repair (BER) is a very important mechanism for repairing oxidative DNA damage. There are many enzymes involved in BER.
