Rat mammary carcinoma (RMC) cells derived from serially transplantable mammary tumors are independent of epidermal growth factor (EGF) for long-term growth in serum-free medium. This phenotype is in contrast to that of normal mammary epithelial cells or cells derived from nontransplantable tumors that express an absolute requirement for EGF for growth in culture.
