Steel factor (SLF) (aka: mast cell growth factor, stem cell factor, kit ligand) is the product of the murine Steel locus on chromosome 10 and is a ligand for the c-kit protooncogene. Isolation of cDNAs for SLF revealed that it was a membrane bound growth factor.
