Specific DNA sequences can be amplified from tissue material by means of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using oligonucleotides homologous to upstream and downstream flanking regions as primers for repeated cycles of Taq polymerase-mediated DNA synthesis (primer extension) in vitro.
