Gilbert's syndrome is a common hereditary chronic or recurrent, mild unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia. Polymorphisms in the bilirubin uridine diphosphate glucuronosyl transferase gene (UGT1A1) causing a decreased enzyme activity are associated with susceptibility to the syndrome.
