Archaeal RadA/Rad51 are close homologues of eukaryal Rad51/DMC1. Such recombinases, as well as their bacterial RecA orthologues, form helical nucleoprotein filaments in which a hallmark strand exchange reaction occurs between homologous DNA substrates.
