Autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome (ALPS) is the first autoimmune hematological disease whose genetic basis has been defined. It is a disorder of apoptosis in which the inability of lymphocytes to die leads to lymphadenopathy, hypersplenism, and autoimmune cytopenias of childhood onset.
