Mammalian reoviruses are internalized into cells by receptor-mediated endocytosis. Within the endocytic compartment, the viral outer capsid undergoes acid-dependent proteolysis resulting in removal of the sigma3 protein and proteolytic cleavage of the mu1/mu1C protein.
