BACKGROUND: Thiopurine S-methyltransferase (TPMT) catalyses the S-methylation of thiopurine drugs. Several mutations in the TPMT gene have been identified which correlate with a low activity phenotype. The molecular basis for TPMT deficiency is not well defined in minority Chinese.
