In Gram-positive bacteria, the expression of iron-regulated genes is mediated by a class of divalent metal-dependent regulatory (DmdR) proteins. We cloned and characterized two dmdR genes of Streptomyces coelicolor that were located in two different nonoverlapping cosmids.
