Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the formation of senile plaques of the amyloid peptide (Abeta) derived from a large Abeta precursor protein (APP). Autosomally inherited or "familial" AD has only been previously demonstrated in connection with coding sequence missense mutations.
