Acute anemia initiates a systemic response that results in the rapid mobilization and differentiation of erythroid progenitors in the adult spleen. The flexed-tail (f) mutant mice exhibit normal steady-state erythropoiesis but are unable to rapidly respond to acute erythropoietic stress.
