Infection with Verotoxin producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) has been implicated in hemolytic uremic syndrome, the leading cause of pediatric renal failure. Verotoxin (VT) binds to globotriaosylceramide (Gal alpha 1-4Gal beta 1-4GlcCer Gb3) in susceptible cells.
