The authors describe a patient with autosomal-recessive severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) with severe, multiorgan cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease. In the face of appropriate therapy, the patient developed a 100-fold gradient in viral load across the blood-brain barrier.
