Mitochondrial disorders can be caused by mutations in nuclear or mitochondrial encoded genes. Point mutations and large deletions in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) are responsible for a small portion of the molecular defects in the mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation system.
