We determined the frequency of hepatitis B virus (HBV) occult infection and studied S gene mutations in HIV or hepatitis C virus-co-infected patients with persistent pattern 'anti-hepatitis B core alone'. HBV DNA was particularly frequent in HIV-positive patients.
