The glycation and oxidation of proteins/lipids leads to the generation of a new class of biologically active moieties, the advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs). Recent studies have elucidated that carboxymethyllysine (CML) adducts of proteins/lipids are a highly prevalent AGE in vivo.
