The cause of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), the most common form of the atypical parkinsonian disorders, is unknown. PSP is characterized by four-repeat tau aggregates in neurons (neurofibrillary tangles) and glia in specific basal ganglia and brainstem areas.
