Chromium(VI) oxide and chromium(III) chloride were tested in the wing somatic mutation and recombination test (SMART) in Drosophila melanogaster according to standard procedures. The hexavalent compound was highly genotoxic in both chronic and acute treatments whereas the trivalent one was clearly negative.
