Mutations in the genes encoding the type 1 fimbriae of Salmonella typhimurium were isolated by selecting for the deletion of Tn10 inserted adjacent to the chromosomal fim+ genes and screening for the loss of mannose-sensitive haemagglutination (HA) activity.
