Using positional cloning in a canine model of narcolepsy and mouse gene knockouts, genes involved in the pathogenesis of narcolepsy in animals have been identified. Hypocretin/orexin ligand and hypocretin/orexin receptor genes are key to the pathogenesis of narcolepsy in animals.
