Glycoprotein D (gD) interacts with two alternative protein receptors, nectin1 and HveA, to mediate herpes simplex virus (HSV) entry into cells. Fusion of the envelope with the plasma membrane requires, in addition to gD, glycoproteins gB, gH, and gL.
