Bordetella pertussis and Bordetella bronchiseptica, gram-negative respiratory pathogens of mammals, possess a heme iron utilization system encoded by the bhuRSTUV genes. Preliminary evidence suggested that expression of the BhuR heme receptor was stimulated by the presence of heme under iron-limiting conditions.
