Mouse embryos lacking the retinoic acid (RA) receptors RARalpha1 and RARbeta suffer from a failure to properly septate (divide) the early outflow tract of the heart into distinct aortic and pulmonary channels, a phenotype termed persistent truncus arteriosus.
