Two non-erythroid members of the erythrocyte Rhesus (Rh) protein family, RhBG and RhCG, have been recently cloned in the kidney. These proteins share homologies with specific NH(3)/NH(4)(+) transporters (Mep/Amt) in primitive organisms and plants.
