Posttranscriptional gene silencing (PTGS) processes double-stranded (ds) RNAs into 21-25 nucleotide (nt) RNA fragments that direct ribonucleases to target cognate mRNAs. In higher plants, PTGS also generates mobile signals conferring sequence-specific silencing in distant organs.
