Breast and ovarian cancers exhibit similar epidemiologic, genotypic, and phenotypic characteristics. Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) and the PTEN tumor suppressor gene product phosphorylate and dephosphorylate the same 3' site in the inositol ring of membrane phosphatidylinositols.
