Scytalone dehydratase is involved in the production of fungal dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN) melanin. We have isolated and characterized OSD1, a gene encoding scytalone dehydratase from the sap-staining fungus Ophiostoma floccosum by PCR-based cloning.
