Colletotrichum lagenarium and Alternaria alternata produce a dark pigment, melanin. The C. lagenarium PKS1 and A. alternata ALM genes are involved in polyketide synthesis in the melanin biosynthesis pathway. PKS1 encodes a type 1 polyketide synthase.
