Different types of nucleated fetal cells (trophoblasts, erythroblasts, lymphocytes, and granulocytes) have been recovered in maternal peripheral blood. In spite of many attempts to estimate the number of fetal cells in maternal circulation, there is still much controversy concerning this aspect.
