Mice homozygous for the recessive patchwork (pwk) mutation are characterized by a variegated pigment pattern with a mixture of unpigmented and normally pigmented hairs. The pigmented hair bulbs contain functional melanocytes. By contrast, the unpigmented hair bulbs contain no melanocytes.
