PURPOSE: Cryptorchidism is the most common congenital abnormality of the genitalia. However, its exact etiology remains to be defined. Homeobox (HOX) containing genes have a key role in the morphogenesis of segmental structures along the primary body axis, including the urogenital mesenchyma.
